  • Fuel costs weigh on Iberia in first quarter
Spanish Oneworld carrier Iberia slid to a ?400,000 ($617,000) first quarter net loss, after spiralling fuel costs hampered it from matching its ?12.2 million net profit for the first quarter of 2007. Between January and March Iberia?s operating revenues fell fractionally to ?1.3 billion, but its costs were 2.5% up at ?1.33 billion, causing its EBITDAR to drop 29% to ?124 million. The Spanish firm swung to a ?28 million EBIT loss from a ?13 million profit. Operating losses for the quarter stood at ?6.6 million, down from a ?14 million operating profit. In its inquiry into the Finncomm Airlines incident last year, the Finnish Accident Investigation Board has catalogued a series of deficiencies with the carrier?s organisation, at a time when it was broadening its regional network to serve as a feeder for Finnair. The board states that the carrier had been unprepared for a rapid introduction of ATR turboprops and did not have the resources to cope. Finncomm set up its own type-rating training organisation to overcome the difficulties of sourcing

Allowing passengers to play music and video content from their own Apple iPod players over installed in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems is one of several features that will be offered onboard Air New Zealand aircraft in the near-term. The carrier has opted to equip 13 Airbus A320s and five Boeing 767s with Panasonic?s X Series IFE systems. In addition to iPod integration, the IFE platform from August will offer video and audio on demand (AVOD), moving map, games, USB media player, and other entertainment options. As Air New Zealand?s long-term strategy evolves, advanced functionality can easily be added to the system, says Panasonic. ?The Panasonic X Series meets our needs because of its capability and reliability.
